Name: Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Brut Rose NV
Vineyard/Winemaker: Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin
Origin: Reims, Champagne, France
Varietal: 50-55% Pinot Noir, 15-20% Pinot Meunier, 28-33% Chardonnay
Pairs with: A good rosé can stand up to some pretty rich dishes—smoked duck, lobster or even hot sausage. In fact, I'd drink a rosé Champagne with just about any food that demands a light, juicy red or a full-bodied white. -Food & Wine, December 2002.
When I drank it: Husband bought a bottle to enjoy while we ate our Thanksgiving appetizer, a pear brie number.
My thoughts: Husband and I visited the Veuve caves when we were in Reims last year so it holds a special place in my heart. Add the fact that it's a rose? Mwah! (that's the sound of me kissing it) It's THE perfect drink to ring in 2011.
What the winemaker says: The nose is elegant and generous, with initial aromas of fresh red fruit (raspberry, wild strawberry, cherry and blackberry) leading to dried fruits and biscuit notes (almonds, apricots and brioche). On the palate, the fresh first impression is followed by a fruity harmonious sensation.
Approximate cost: $62.99
